Broken Apron Strings - Women Pioneering Reform In Kentucky
Broken Apron Strings was inspired by my daughter’s apron that converts to a pioneer bonnet. It inspired a study of Kentucky women who were pioneers of reform. Fifteen women were chosen since Kentucky is the 15th state. These are women who didn’t stay in traditional roles, but broke the apron strings and fought hard to improve life for others.
It was their passion and determination in overcoming obstacles, their generosity and love that has changed all our lives for the better.
The faces were sketched on fabric and fused to a heavy-weight stabilizer. Hair and clothing were freehand cut and tacked in place. Each piece was thread painted and colored with pencil, inks and pastels, before appliquéing to the quilt block.
Permission was granted for use of each photo used as reference for quilt maker’s sketchesThis quilt has fifteen women to represent that Kentucky was the fifteenth state to join the union. The quilt includes a booklet with information about each of the fifteen women included.
